The Syma X8HG has been on the market since 2016 and is a safe drone for drone novices and young people. The headless mode and the hovering function of this Syma drone emphasize this.

New features are the 8 megapixel camera and the overcurrent protection mode, which is activated when a very high resistance is applied to the drives, for example by an object in one of the propellers.

Compared to other drones in this price segment, it has really enormous dimensions of 50 x 50 x 19 cm. The 8.0 MP HD camera has a similar shape as typical GoPro cameras, which gives the impression of quality. Whether the drone really delivers what it promises, we show you in our Syma X8HG test in which we critically examine some points.

Syma X8HG FPV – Yes or No?

Many of our readers are particularly interested in the FPV mode of the drone. However, for whatever reason, the Syma X8HG is no longer sold with this feature. The videos are only stored on an internal SD card in 1080p. If you want to have the drone with wifi, you should use the Syma X8HW, which has a wifi FPV camera. That the Syma X8HG is sold with such a wifi camera with FPV function is a misinformation!

Technical details and special features

A special highlight for this price category is the barometer of the X8HG. It always keeps the drone at the exact height and, in combination with the 6-fold stabilisation gyro, ensures that it floats very stable and reliable in the air.

A barometer works by air pressure, sometimes the drone may move slightly downwards, but then it corrects this immediately. This technology is actually only used in much more expensive models.

Here are some Syma X8HG facts, figures and data:

  • Flight time: 6-8 minutes per battery (without camera up to 11 minutes)
  • Charging time: about 120-180 minutes
  • Range: about 70-100 meters
  • Battery: 7.4 Volt 2000 mAh Lithium Polymer Battery
  • Weight: 1500 g
  • 8.0 MP HD camera
  • 6-axis gyroscope
  • Headless mode, high speed/low speed mode and 3D stunts
  • LED light for night flights

Advantages and disadvantages of Syma X8HG

First let’s talk about the disadvantages: The Syma X8HG has a very high weight, which makes it very wind resistant. However, it also makes it more cumbersome and therefore does not climb as fast.

For the price one should not expect too much in terms of image quality. But it is quite sufficient for shots and snapshots. Since the drone does not have a gimbal, the movements on the shot are visible. In this video you can get a picture of it yourself:

If you own a GoPro 3 or 4, the X8HG can deliver even higher quality images. But the problem of the missing gimbal still exists. That a drone in this price category does not have such a system is completely normal!

Unfortunately, it does not have an extra home button that you can use to enter the Return-To-Home mode. Another disadvantage is the bad flight/loading time ratio. Because when flying with the installed camera the fun is over after 6-8 minutes and after that the battery needs to be recharged for 2-3 hours. But you can remedy this by buying for example 3 batteries and a 3in1 charging cable.

The advantages outweigh the disadvantages, on the one hand the drone is, as already mentioned, a very good model for drone beginners, on the other hand it looks very robust, flies stable and has a whole range of interesting flight modes. Especially the hovering flight (Altitude Hold) over the barometer speaks for the X8HG.

What makes this model, like many other quadrocopters from Syma, interesting for beginners is the propeller protection. Before the start you should put on the so-called bumpers. These are the bumpers at the rotors, as you can see on the pictures. We especially recommend to put on this protection if you have little flying experience and want to fly indoors.

If you are not familiar with this, you don’t need to be afraid of assembling the drone. It is actually almost “ready to fly”. You only have to mount the propeller, propeller guard and the feet, as well as charge the battery, insert it and then nothing stands in the way of flying.

Conclusion

For now almost 120 € you get a top drone with the Syma X8HW. Buyers looking for a quadrocopter in this price range are often very satisfied with the construction, design, quality and features of Syma drones.

Although it only has a range of about 100 metres, the fact that in Germany the Drone Act stipulates that drones may only be flown within visual range puts the statement that 100 metres might not be enough into perspective. At this distance it is difficult to see how the drone is moving. The headless mode is an advantage here, as the X8HG moves as you move the joysticks, regardless of how the head is aligned.

Which drone is suitable for you, you have to decide for yourself. For example, if you want to lie and shoot Youtube videos, it is less suitable, because it has no Follow Me function. In this case we recommend the more expensive models from DJI.

If you just want to take some snapshots during your holidays or to explore your rural area from the air, then this is the perfect solution.

Therefore, we have a clear recommendation to buy this model!
