We looked around for a time lapse camera and found the cheap Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam.

This camera delivers very high quality time lapse pictures, uses little battery capacity and can create time lapse pictures for hours and then stitch them together into a video.

This goes so far that you can record, for example, the colouring of the leaves on the trees or the growth and blossoming of new plants in spring over many weeks.

It is easy to use and is particularly beginner-friendly. What else we think of the Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam you can read in this report.

Technical features

The camera takes a picture every minute, but 7 different time intervals can be set for triggering. The Garden Watch Cam then automatically assembles the photos into a movie and you can download it to a device of your choice (PC, tablet or other system with Windows, Mac OS X or Linux) using a USB port.

The use is very versatile and you will have a lot of fun with this reliable garden camera.

Design and appearance

Brino action-cam

Structure and design are made so that the camera typically fits into the idyllic garden landscape. The colour is grass-green and the on/off switch is in orange under the camera lens.

Above the camera sensor there are 3 status LEDs. These show whether the camera is on or off, the battery is full or the USB flash memory is full.

The dimensions are 93 x 192 x 60 mm and the weight is about 260 grams without batteries.

Holder for attachments

In the set there are many different attachment systems, which you can attach to the housing. These differ in shape, structure, length and stability.

In itself, the housing is weatherproof and suitable for continuous operation, but we recommend not necessarily to place the camera in a puddle, as the manufacturer does not give any information about the extent to which the Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam is completely waterproof.

Image sensor, resolution and memory

In the Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam is a 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor installed. It records photos and saves them in JPEG format to release them in AV format for viewing.

The recordings are stored on a 2 Gbyte USB flash card, this memory card is even included. Stored photos get a time and date stamp, so you can later use selected pictures from the recordings for further use. Alternatively, you can also use a storage medium with a capacity of up to 8 Gbyte.

The GWC model generates a video resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels, i.e. HD resolution, and stores it in AVI format. The field of view is only 49.5 degrees.

Menu navigation and recording modes

The Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam for garden use has many different settings. Among other things, you can set the time intervals very differently.

You can choose between time lapse intervals of 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours and 24 hours in which the camera always takes a picture.

Otherwise there is not much to say, because the cam is very easy to use. The whole operation is done with one button.

How good is the picture quality?

The picture quality is OK but not very good. Of course you cannot compare the Brinno GWC001 Garden Watch Cam with a conventional action camera regarding the quality of the pictures.

For time lapse videos the quality is definitely good enough. It’s only a 1.3 megapixel photo sensor, but the time-lapse videos are still good.

Colour depth

Also the color depth is quite good for the cheap camera, but could be a little more saturated.

Light conditions

In low light conditions the shots are not as good but better than we thought at the beginning. Between sunny and rainy days one can see a clear difference in the brightness of the recorded images.

For which applications is the camera suitable?

Interval times

For high-quality, beautiful garden photos, close-ups and creating time-lapse videos over many weeks and even months (up to 24 h time interval adjustable).

Because of their light weight, compact size and various attachments, they are versatile and can be mounted in many ways.

You can create fascinating time-lapse videos of passing clouds, road traffic, melting snow, sunrises, etc.
