A quadrocopter model that hasn’t been on the market for very long and is really well performed is the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G with Wifi and FPV function.

This is a foldable drone design similar to the DJI Mavic and Mavic 2 that we have already tested. Because the quadrocopter can be folded, it is more compact than competitive models that do not have this feature. With a foldable drone, the quality and functionality are maintained despite the smaller space requirement.

For transport you can easily fold the model and for flying you can simply unfold and take off. When folded, the drone actually fits into any conventional backpack, but unfortunately not into a normal trouser pocket.

In fact, the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G looks a bit like the Mavic in terms of design. However, there are differences in quality here and there. We noticed in the past few months that more and more of these replicas are coming onto the market. The Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G is not one of these standard copies, it is too different from the Mavic. But they do have a few things in common.

Technical data

Vitus Starlight

The drone comes to your home including infrared, some optical sensors and a 3-axis gimbal system. In addition, a GPS / GLONASS positioning and navigation system is integrated, where the drone communicates with 2 satellite systems to maintain an even better flight stability.

This gives you double security. The Russian satellite system GLONASS alone requires 24 satellite systems worldwide which are in orbit around the earth, so that a regulated process of information transmission can take place over a large area of the earth. In addition, there is the usual American GPS system, .

Both systems work in such a way that the receiver (in our case the Walkera VITUS Starlight) can calculate its current position very accurately by means of the signal received from the satellites and correct it accordingly. Because a dual GPS module is used here, the flight quality and position determination of the copter is much more precise.

Satellite systems work almost everywhere, rarely are there areas where neither GLONASS nor GPS can be received. Additionally there is the optical sensor technology. This combination gives you maximum safety when flying and we can recommend the drone to beginners who are not so experienced.

Size, design and weight

The appearance of the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G drone is very futuristic and makes a modern impression. We especially liked the body, it is quite slim and looks a bit insect-like. The foldable wings are also quite thin but still stable.

Starlight folded

Also the propellers can be folded without any problems and you can easily disassemble them in a few steps.

As combo version including camera the drone looks very powerful and even more powerful. This may be due to the fact that the gimbal system looks quite big and powerful. But it works very reliable.

In itself the VITUS Starlight has the following dimensions: 22.90 x 27.90 x 11.30 cm in the order of length, width and height. The weight of the drone is about 920 grams.

Camera, memory and FPV live image transmission

The heart and the absolute rarity is certainly the integrated gimbal camera. But this is only available in the combination package. In the normal standard version, the camera and the gimbal system are not included.

A special highlight is also the integrated sensor technology, which makes it possible to see everything at night. The camera has an ultra-sensitive light sensor which identifies enormously weak light sources and amplifies them so that a clear image can be created. Even with an illumination level of less than 0.001 Lux.

Because of the closing times, standard night vision cameras can often only record blurry and poorly lit videos at night due to the long exposure time.

However, the camera of the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G drone is perfectly suited for flights and recordings at night, due to the Night-Vision Starlight System. Here the exposure times do not have to be extended and the shutter times are enormously reduced, so that the cam can take high-quality photos at night without blurred effects.

Battery, range and flight time

Vitus in flight

A rechargeable battery with a charge of 5200mAh is used as energy source. This works at a voltage of about 11.4 volts. How long the flight time actually lasts depends on your flight behaviour, but usually it is between 20 and 25 minutes.

The maximum transmission distance ranges from 1 kilometre to 2 kilometres. But you can get into real trouble here in Germany if you use the maximum range. There are some important laws regarding drone flying. For example, these may only be flown within visual range!

For the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G drone you also need a drone license plate.

How to fly the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G UAV?

Compared to many other models available on the market, the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G drone is very reliable and balanced. The balance is always there, even if you take your fingers off the controls, the quadrocopter balances itself completely and automatically goes into hover flight.

Otherwise the Walkera VITUS Starlight 5.8G drone is pretty fast and agile in the air.

For what purposes can the drone be used?

The Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone is quite versatile due to its extensive functions.

Due to the folding function the model can be taken almost everywhere. For example, take it with you on holiday, excursions, walks on the beach or in the fields. Especially at the sea some drones seem to have a problem with the wind forces there. However, since the Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone is quite large and robust, there should be no problems in most regions, except for really extreme wind conditions.

In the scope of supply also a carrying bag from Walkera is included, in which you can pack the accessories and the folded copter.

As explained in more detail above, the night vision concept is quite phenomenal and therefore the Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone is used abroad partly as a surveillance aircraft at night.

The Vitus Starlight is equipped with a variety of applications that can be used at night.

These include, for example, comprehensive traffic monitoring, anti-terrorism monitoring, monitoring of disaster status, military monitoring, rescue monitoring and so on.

A traffic surveillance is quite easy with the night vision camera, because the cam recognizes individual license plates very clearly and can successfully support the police in their work to fight traffic offences.

The military also enjoys the new technologies of our time. Because thanks to the long-range image transmission technology, the Vitus Starlight can already replace the human being quite well to carry out military surveillance even in the dark.

Persons who want to use this drone for professional purposes should study the manual very carefully and practice the use of the Vitus Starlight.

Authorities abroad partly use this drone and are quite satisfied with the aircraft. In Germany we don’t know anything about it yet, but the Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone is not as famous and highly valued here as for example in the American area.

Scope of delivery – What’s all in it?

Of course the copter is “ready to fly” and so to speak ready for action without you having to mount anything else (except the propeller). The scope of delivery is therefore also very clear and everything you need to start the drone is included:

  • 1x Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone
  • 1x Devo F8S transmitter (remote control)
  • 1x 3D gimbal
  • 1x Starlight Camera
  • 4x propellers
  • 1x 11.4V 5200mah Lipo battery
  • 1x Charger
  • 2x Stand Cushion A/B
  • 1x 16G TF Card
  • 1x user manual

Assets and drawbacks

The Starlight up close

Admittedly, the price is quite high, although the Vitus Starlight is also quite suitable for beginners, but in our experience beginners will want to invest a little less money in a first drone. For advanced users who would like to get something new and plan with a budget of 800 to 1000 Euro, this drone is very well suited.

With this model, you get a lot of advantages that other drones can’t give you. We have also discovered a few small disadvantages and will give you a brief explanation of the facts.

Advantages:

  • Very reliable copter with many functions
  • Unique camera with Starlight Vision System for clear vision even at night
  • Pretty clean gimbal system
  • The drone can be folded and taken everywhere
  • Rugged construction
  • Can be used incredibly versatile (extensive airspace surveillance)
  • High transmission distance (up to 2 kilometers transmission range)
  • Ready To Fly – Everything is included

Disadvantages:

  • Camera cannot produce 4K video recordings
  • The drone is hardly known in Germany and therefore so far only available in foreign shops

Conclusion

Last but not least, the Walkera Vitus Starlight 5.8G drone is well worth the price, but there are a few things we miss. For example, the ability to produce 4K video recordings, because in this price segment all drone cameras have that.

On the other hand, we have to say that the flight time could be a bit longer, because the 20-25 minutes stated by the manufacturer are okay but not outstanding. Assuming that you accelerate really hard and want to know it, the battery will run down a bit faster. But this is grumbling on a high level and maybe not quite appropriate, we would have expected more at this price.

The price/performance ratio is okay, there are no enormous disadvantages with this model. Especially the night vision camera is ingenious, we only find this on a few drone models.
