A rather unusual remote controlled aircraft is the EHANG Ghost drone with FPV and VR goggles. It has a rather interesting design, its propellers are pointing downwards, otherwise it has features similar to the Phantom 1 from DJI.

It is suitable for both beginners and advanced pilots as it has a sophisticated stabilisation system and a high-precision 3-axis gimbal system.

A pretty cool feature, which is almost a unique selling point, is the included VR-glasses. The gimbal suspension not only ensures a wobble-free image, you can also control the camera movement by tilting the VR glasses.

When the pilot looks down with the goggles on, the camera also moves down in this direction. Upwards this principle works the same way and this is what makes the EHANG Ghost Drone so unique.

Technical details, specifications and features

gutes Flugverhalten

Many drone fans like to use DJI models, but there are many other quadrocopters from other manufacturers, including the Hubsan drone, Parrot Bebop 2 and several others. What makes the EHANG Ghost so special is not only its FPV glasses, but is in the details. More precisely in the technical specifications. An enormously powerful camera, precise flight characteristics and reliable modes are at your disposal.

Camera, live image, VR glasses and recording quality

Kamera

It is equipped with a 12 megapixel 4K Sphere camera with which you can create professional 4K video recordings at a frame rate of 30 frames per second.

The gyro system with 3 axes balances the image with regard to the flight attitude so perfectly that gusts of wind or changes in movement on the plane are not visible in the video recordings.

The live image is sent directly to the smartphone or tablet and you can follow the recordings in real time. Alternatively you can watch the live image with FPV glasses. As already mentioned, the camera of the drone can be controlled by the tilt angle of the VR goggles. If you look down, the camera will also move down and vice versa.

In the front of the VR glasses is another camera to observe the outside world. It is possible to switch back and forth between the VR goggles camera and the drone camera by pressing a button.

The view inside the goggles is good, the picture is not blurred and has no color cast. For the drone pilot this offers an optimal flight experience.

Weight and size are average for such glasses, they do not press on the nose and fit quite well. You might have to adjust the eye relief a bit, but this is usually not a problem.

The VR goggles are somewhat lacking in range, the transmitters have a maximum range of about 500 meters. In the scope of supply there are 2 transmitters, one with 2.4 Ghz and one with 5.8 Ghz transmission frequency.

As the transmitters are marked, you have to be careful to mount them correctly. You must not mix them up, otherwise the VR glasses will not work. The markings 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz are on the transmitters and on the VR glasses themselves. As soon as you have screwed them both on in the right place, the goggles are technically ready for use.

Battery and flight time

Remarkable is the maximum flight time of the EHANG Ghost drone. It brings it up to 25 minutes per battery charge. The flight battery is of very high quality, it has a high charge capacity and a total of 4500 mAh, which corresponds to about 67 Wh. To charge a completely empty battery takes about 60-70 minutes. An integrated sensor system prevents the current state of charge. Additionally you will be informed in real time about the charging status via LEDs.

Intelligent charging systems as we see it with this drone are standard with the market leader DJI and they have proven themselves, which speaks for the quality of the battery system of the EHANG Ghost Drone.

High speeds, perfect agility and mature flight stability

The Avatar mode can be compared to the sport mode of the DJI drones. If the mode is active, you can accelerate the drone up to 60 kilometers per hour in horizontal speed. If the EHANG Ghost is in GPS mode, it can reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h or is “locked” at this speed. If you want to ascend quickly, the quadrocopter can reach an ascent speed of about 2.5 m/s and 1.5 m/s in descent.

The EHANG Ghost is definitely suitable for beginners, because it has a system that corrects the flight path automatically, in GPS mode it also keeps its position pretty much exactly in hover, you can then release all control sticks and the drone stands like nailed in the air.

If you are used to very fast drones, the EHANG Ghost may seem a bit cumbersome. However, this is not due to the lack of speed (up to 60 km/h after all), but rather to the high weight. With 1150 grams it belongs in its size class to the rather heavier flight models. The flight agility is good but not outstanding, this can be a big advantage for beginners, but for professionals it might be a point of criticism.

Flight modes and further features

App und Features

A variety of flight modes, features and settings are available to you.

As usual with other models (Parrot Bebop 2, DJI drones, etc.), this drone can also be started and landed by pressing a start/landing button as soon as the aircraft hovers at a preset altitude.

In avatar mode, the copter can be controlled using the tilt angle of the smartphone. If the phone is tilted forward, the drone moves forward, if it is tilted backwards, it flies backwards.

Another mode is the Touch-To-Go mode, in which you can simply use touch on the map to determine where the quadrocopter should fly to, then the EHANG Ghost will fly to the selected destination by itself.

Of course the drone also has a Follow-Me mode, where the drone follows you at every turn. It keeps the distance to you constant, so you can climb, ride your bike or during other leisure activities where you move, film from a bird’s eye view.

Return To Home: Should the EHANG Ghost Drone suddenly reach a low battery level, it will fly back to the starting point on its own. You can also start the return flight at any time by pressing a button. This feature is especially advantageous for beginners.

In the app, which was perfectly developed for this quadrocopter, you can start a training program and “practice dry”.

Is the price of the EHANG Ghost Drone justified?

Surely you are wondering what justifies the high purchase price.

Well, on the one hand this drone has a lot of special features, which are not available in other drones of the same price range. The VR goggles are one such feature, which is normally only found on the Parrot Bebop 2. This one is a bit cheaper, but has a much worse VR goggle.

VR Headset

If you buy a DJI drone and the matching VR glasses from DJI, you’ll get another 300 to 600 € more. Assuming you get the DJI Mavic Air, which costs 750 € and a pair of matching VR glasses from DJI (around 300 €), you’ll be in the four-figure range (1050 €). For the EHANG Ghost you pay a little under 700 € with drone and glasses!

Conclusion

Ehang Ghost Drohne

Compared to other drones of the same price and size class, the EHANG Ghost performs quite well. The quadrocopter leaves quite a positive impression with many drone pilots.

There are a few criticisms here and there, but it is also a matter of taste and subjective feeling if you like a quadrocopter or not. After all, this drone has a rather unusual construction and not everyone likes the design with the propeller drive pointing downwards.

Some people might be angry about the high price (about 700 €), but you have to say that there are 2 models, this is the EHANG Ghost 2.0 VR version. There is another model without VR glasses, which is much cheaper.

As with many other quadrocopter models in this price range, the camera is quite good, but also not so outstanding to impress a professional videographer. Professional videographers might be better off with an Inspire or Mavic drone from DJI, but the recording quality of the EHANG Ghost is perfectly sufficient for private purposes!

All in all you get a good drone for a fair price. With VR glasses it is of course more expensive than without.
