Today we present the GDU-O2 drone, which is ideal for selfies. It is a very professionally built model with triaxial stabilized camera balancer, visual positioning and foldable design.

You have a wide range of recording modes at your disposal and you can connect your smartphone to your drone via app and WLAN. Not only the live image is transmitted, but also extensive data is displayed and you can set the most important things in the app menu.

The quadrocopter looks extremely modern, but let’s take a closer look at what the modern drone with camera has to offer.

Technical data

The high-tech company GDU is specialized in designing and producing extremely high quality and modern drones. The quality is quite good and you can compare this brand with DJI. However, in our opinion GDU is by no means a competition for the market leader DJI. GDU is far from being able to hold a candle to it.

One of the manufacturer’s best drones, the GDU-O2 drone is foldable, has a 4K camera and captures breathtaking images with very high depth of field. The field of view here is about 79.8 degrees, which is mainly due to the fact that it is a really very small gimbal camera.

In addition, the drone has a visual positioning and obstacle avoidance. Thus you have maximum safety during the flight. When landing, the GDU-O2 drone can detect obstacles and objects below it and avoid them successfully.

The obstacle avoidance system is also partly available in the DJI drones and is therefore not a novelty on the market. Nevertheless it is interesting that other drone manufacturers are following suit. The copter can swerve in all directions, should there be a danger of crash, the model automatically goes into hovering state, even if you keep your fingers off the lever.

However, the objects must have a solid structure and should be sufficiently illuminated so that the vision positioning system can identify them. Here, the forward facing sensors operate in a range between 0.6 and 1.5 meters and downward between 0.3 and 1.3 meters.

This model flies quite stable, not only because of the Vision Positioning System, but also because of the ultrasonic sensors. However, the GPS signal has the most influence on the flight stability, which provides very fine course corrections and thus keeps the drone in place. Even if this system should fail because the GPS signal is too weak, the drone will fall back on alternative systems.

Size, design and weight

GDU 02

The GDU-O2 drone can be folded easily and quickly. We have already tested quite a few quadrocopters and in some cases they are replicas and copies of the DJI Mavic. This seems to be the case here, because the GDU-O2 drone is built the same way.

Nevertheless it is not a 1 to 1 copy, that would not be legal.

folded

With the GDU O2, the wings can be folded in and the propellers can be removed in no time at all.

All in all, this drone looks a bit more angular than the DJI Mavic or DJI Mavic 2, and the transport is very comfortable due to the folding design.

When folded out, the copter measures 185.5 mm x 52 mm x 93 mm and has a total weight including battery of about 708 grams.

Camera, memory and FPV live image transmission

The camera is also really ingenious and the central piece of a copter, where you can measure the quality. Here a 1/3 inch CMOS sensor with 13 million pixels has been installed, which has an equivalent focal length of 25.5 mm F2.2.

Here the maximum photo resolution is 4208 x 3120 pixels. The electronic shutter speed is controlled automatically and the maximum video resolution is 4K. In the menu you can choose between the following resolution formats:

  • 4K: 3840 x 2160 at 25 or 30 fps
  • 1080P: 1920 x 1080 at 60 or 30 fps
  • 720P: 1280 x 720 at 60 or 30fps

Photos are generally saved in JPG format and videos in MP4.

The GDU O2 is equipped with a three-axis mechanical gimbal system, so you don’t have to worry about camera shake. This is light, compact and reacts very quickly to changes in flight attitude.

Battery, range and flight time

Remote control

The built-in flight battery is quite powerful with 4000 mAh. It provides a maximum flight time up to 20 minutes. But you can also just buy some spare batteries to fly longer. The fact is that the flight batteries can be easily removed and quickly changed.

The batteries in the transmitter are also quite powerful with 1200 mAh. Here you can get a range of up to 1 kilometre. HD video transmission also reaches this distance thanks to the integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor.

How well can the GDU-O2 drone actually fly?

Thanks to the dual GPS system, i.e. GPS and GLONASS, the O2 can communicate with up to 20 satellites and thus guarantee an absolutely stable flight attitude.

Not only does this quadrocopter fly very stable, the high speed it can reach is also terrific, which is quickly 54 kilometres per hour.

However, you should be careful not to fly too close to people.

In our opinion, the GDU-O2 is very well suited for beginners and also advanced users.

Many intelligent flight modes

In the app menu of the GDU-O2 drone you can choose between many flight modes, similar to the DJI Mavic. These help you and take a lot of work off your hands. For example, you can use the Follow Me mode, Rocket mode and Dronie mode as supporting program.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the GDU-O2:

  • Very high-quality quadrocopter with many recording functions
  • 4K Camera
  • Powerful drive and precise, stable flight attitude
  • High quality workmanship and clear design
  • Folding drone
  • Very good price/performance ratio
  • Many different flight modes are available to you
  • Smartphone connection via Wifi
  • You can connect your smartphone to the drone
  • Vision positioning system
  • GPS and GLONASS for even more safety

Disadvantages:

  • Unfortunately too expensive for many beginners

Conclusion

Conclusion

With the purchase of the GDU-O2 drone you have the possibility to buy a copter that is very close to the DJI Mavic model but costs only a fraction of it. Nevertheless, the price will be within a range that is not in the budget for many beginners. But beginners are well advised to buy this drone, because with the Vision Positioning System, GPS/GLONASS and an extensive sensor system they are on the safe side.

The 4K camera also inspires advanced drone pilots. However, many are skeptical and consider the GDU-O2 a cheap copy of the Mavic. Meanwhile, the technical components are very good and deliver similar results as the Mavic we already presented in this review.

On Amazon you can get the GDU-O2 drone for a reasonable price, just have a look!(click here)*
